A Day at the Beach, 1950

(As usual, thank heavens for Life magazine.)

Groucho Marx, Leg Inspector

Groucho Marx
Groucho Marx died August 19, 1977, but his passing
was somewhat overshadowed by the death of Elvis
Presley on August 16th. It's sort of the way that
Princess Diana's August 31, 1997 passing crowded
out the news stories of Mother Teresa's death on
September 5th of that year. Say what you will, I
miss Groucho the most.

Do you get the impression that the gentlemen
in these pictures are, uh, what you might call
"non-threatening" types?

Who's Left?

I found this photo at Vintage Photo. It's listed
as a "Marian Carr" photo; she's the delicious
blonde on the right. Actually, it's a group photo
from the 1955 film Kiss Me Deadly.

Then I ran across this Mary Tyler Moore Show
cast photo from the 1970s recently posted at
Stirred, Straight Up, with a Twist.

Weird, no?
Cloris Leachman, like a good wine, got better
with age. (Me, my favorites are on the right
side in both photos.)

What's interesting about this last photo is how the
retouching work isn't finished. The darkroom artist
has "dodged" white clouds into the upper corners
to obscure the edges of the sky backdrop, but the
print hasn't yet been cropped. It's probably time
to get a longer backdrop or send a couple of these
girls home to Omaha or Oxnard. (Cold but true.)
