Glancing Back at Futureworld

Blythe Danner
Last night I watched Futureworld (1976) with the lovely Blythe Danner. It was shot among the most modernistic (for 1976) architecture of Houston, Texas, including the Johnson Space Center. A very skinny Peter Fonda plays a goofy-cranky journalist who runs down tunnels and climbs around subterranean steam pipes. Scrumptious Blythe Danner plays a television reporter. Character actor John P. Ryan plays his usual sinister character, a mastermind behind all the (for then state-of-the-art) computery stuff. Arthur Hill, television's Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law, plays a nice-guy public relations type. Stuart Margolin, The Rockford Files' "Angel Martin," plays a surprisingly understated Futureworld amusement park maintenance man. With Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger. Yul Brynner is featured prominently in the film's publicity, but he mainly serves as a flashback to Westworld (1973), when the amusement park went all to hell the first time. He also appears in a frankly bizarre dream sequence with bondaged and strapless Blythe. It was his final screen appearance. There is a Futureworld trailer here, a sexy and NSFW video from a completely unrelated Blythe Danner film here, and numerous much more serious reviews of Futureworld here.

  1. ...Blythe alwayz had that etherial/sensual combo look.

...But damn...don't take me wrong...I really miss ole Yul...such a great actor...In addition to Westworld...does anyone recall "Invitation to a Gunfighter" ? Sorta akin to Shakespeare out West; some say too talky but I really liked the dialogue...and I thought Yul was tops; the direction & story line were great too...J.B. 2/6/10
