Oh Oh Annette

Last night on Turner Classic Movies, the best
darn channel on all of television, I watched a
documentary called The Age of Believing: The
Disney Live-Action Classics. It was all about
Mary Poppins, The Shaggy Dog, The Swiss
Family Robinson, The Love Bug, and stuff
like that. And it floored me that I hadn't
seen any of them. I mean, I've seen part
of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and I
actually sat down and watched The Monkey's
Uncle once (because Annette Funicello was
in it), but otherwise I've missed everything.
Of course, I wasn't permitted to go to movies
when I was a little kid (for some weird reason
having to do with religion), so I never got to
see any Disney classics. By the time I was
finally allowed to go to movies, my growing
mind was not interested in shaggy dogs and
love bugs. I was looking at girls like Annette
Funicello with different thoughts in mind.
Alas, the 1960s was a confusing time. It
even confused Walt Disney, according to
the documentary. I'd go back and watch
those movies, except that the magic of
my childhood, such as it was, has passed.
And just the clips that they showed of those
films look tedious to me. But I still enjoy
the occasional Annette Funicello post.
